Building Bridges: Kent Police REN Conference 2026 — Connecting Communities & Law Enforcement
Introduction
Strong, safe communities are built on trust and trust is built on connection. Recently, I had the privilege of attending the Kent Police Race Equality Network (REN) Conference 2026, a powerful gathering that brought together community leaders, representatives from diverse backgrounds, and officers from Kent Police. The theme was clear: how we can work together to build stronger, more inclusive communities across Kent.
Key Takeaways from the Conference
The event featured inspiring guest speakers who shared personal experiences, highlighted real challenges faced by minority communities, and shone a light on the vital support systems available to those who need help.
A central focus of the day was the role that third-party community organisations like KSLSC can play alongside Kent Police. We explored how we can:
✅ Support victims of crime
✅ Encourage confident, safe reporting of incidents
✅ Bridge the gap between communities and law enforcement
One of the most valuable discussions centred on a simple truth: many people feel uncomfortable or unsure about approaching the police directly. Language barriers, past experiences, or simply not knowing what to expect can stop people from seeking help. That’s where trusted community groups step in — we act as that vital bridge.
Our Role as KSLSC
As President of the Kent Sri Lankan Social Club, I believe our responsibility goes beyond social gatherings and cultural celebrations. We are a trusted voice in our community. That means we have a key role to:
- 🗣️ Raise awareness about how and where to get help
- 🤝 Foster open dialogue between our members and local services
- 📢 Share accurate information about rights, reporting, and support
- 💛 Ensure no one feels alone when they need assistance
Community safety is not just the responsibility of the police it is a shared responsibility. It grows from trust, understanding, cooperation, and mutual respect. When communities and police work with each other, everyone benefits.
Looking Forward
I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Kent Police Race Equality Network, the conference organisers, and every speaker who shared their story. Events like these turn words into action and help us build meaningful, lasting connections.
Stronger communities begin when every voice is heard, every concern is taken seriously, and everyone feels safe and supported.
Let’s keep building those bridges together.
